Lesson Discussion Eight

Students were given the option to chose whichever podcast they chose and then answer a set of questions over it. It was important for students to think about their own future classroom as they were listening to the podcast and answering the questions.

Lesson Question 1. What was the title of the resource (Podcast) you decided to review?

Classroom Behavior Management Systems

Lesson Question 2. Provide a two paragraph overview of the information contained in the Podcast.

Typically, four to six rules are usually laid out on the first day of school and gives an introduction to the classroom rules for students. Displaying rule in a positive manner will help in the effectivness of the classroom rules. It is important to make rules specific and clear in order for children to fully understand what is expected of them. Teachers of younger children will find that it helps for them to see their rules posted. They will periodically scan the classroom and will be reminded of their classroom rules. Older children are often given a code of conduct which will not only be rules for the classroom but also be rules that can help to guide them into life, such as respect others. Codes of conducts are usually principles to live by. When dealing with a child that is breaking the rules it is important to start with a warning and then start with a punishment that continues to worsen each time they repeat the offense. Instead of being negative when issuing a punishment it is important to give a consequence in a positive manner.

Lesson Question 3. Why did you choose this Podcast?

I chose this podcast because it is important to understand behavior, the issues in which it entails, and the proper way in which to manage it. This is a problem that all educators will encounter at some point in their career and having knowledge regarding it will help in dealing with the situation. I also chose this podcast because it related to our Lesson 7 Discussion.

Lesson Question 4. Concerning the information in the Podcast - Was anything surprising to you?

I was not very surprised by anything in the podcast. I did find it interesting though the way in which they said classroom rules needed to be structured. It is an easy fix with a largely positive result.

Lesson Question 5. In your opinion, describe two of three of the most important things you learned from listening to the Podcast.

The most important thing I learned from this podcast was to issue punishments in a positive manner. The podcast gave excellent examples of how to use good behavior to bring attention to bad behavior. Such as if a student is not hanging up their coat bring attention to a student who has hung up their coat by praising them. I also thought it was important to state rules in a more positive way than negative. Instead of saying, "Do not talk out" the teacher could say, "Please raise your hand". Students often focus on the action rather than the words around the action. therefore in the first example they would only see talk and would end up breaking the rule, but in the second they will see raise your hand which would result in a better managed classroom.

Lesson Question 6. How could you use the podcast information in YOUR classroom?

I can use all of the behavioral management strategies in my classroom to help create a better managed environment. When coming up with classroom rules I now know to keep them to a minimum in number, as well as state them positively. I will also avoid saying what not to do and rather what to do.

Summary

I really enjoyed this podcast because it had a lot of important information packed into a small amount of time. Considering behavior is one of the key conflicts teachers will experience in the classroom having proper knowledge on managing it is crucial. Thru an understanding educators are able to implement strategies successfully.

Research analysis

Not overwhelming students with to many rules is important in order for them to better follow the rules that they are given. Simply having the rules posted will not make them a part of your classroom. Rules must be stated and repeated often in order to get them into your students minds. In elementary settings rules can be reviewed daily by repeating them every morning as a part of your morning routine. Making the reviewing of the rules as fun as possible will help in making sure students remember then throughout the day. Typical classroom rules are follow directions quickly, raise your hand for permission to speak or leave your seat, and to make smart choices.

Research Summary

I enjoyed researching common classroom rules, but was not surprised at many of the rules I found. I heard some of them in the podcast, as well as basic knowledge of classrooms. I did however enjoy reading ways in which rules can be reviewed and made more effective for elementary students because I am an early education major.
