Compare and Contrast

 

1. Introduction: Heather Kimmons, April 26th 2015, ADHD, OHI, Whole Class, 17 students
ELA Compare and Contrast

Standards:

  • RL9: Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.
     

2. Behavioral Objectives:

  • As the teacher As the students watch the YouTube video their interest and knowledge of likes and differences will begin to grow and they will begin to participate in the guided practice

  • During guided practice, students will participate in categorizing between likes and differences

  • During independent practice, students will be able to answer the essential question on their own

     

3. Essential Questions:

  • How are two items alike and different?

     

4. Materials:

  • YouTube Video

  • Pictures of Soccer Ball, Baseball, Dog, and Cat

  • Cards Coordinating with Lesson

  • Hula Hoops

  • Writing Paper

     

5. Procedures:

  • Introduction:Activator: Watch you tube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbI-TacJRBk

  • Demonstration:Teacher will model using two hula hoops (in the Venn diagram) that are on the board or table how to compare and contrast a dog and cat (see pictures and cards attached)

  • Guided Practice:Students will come to the board and place the appropriate cards in the appropriate place of the hula hoops using the examples of a dog and cat.

  • Independent Practice:Students will work with a partner to compare and contrast a soccer ball and a baseball. Using cards below students will place them in the correct part of the hula hoop.z

  • ClosingI will close the lesson by asking students to answer the essential question: How are a soccer ball and a baseball alike and different? Then have each student write their interpretation of the essential question.

     

6. Assessment

  • I will do an informal assessment by using a ticket out the door to determine the students’ understanding based on their responses. I will ask them to state how hamburgers and hotdogs are alike and different. 

  • I will assess the independent practice for individual student understanding through their responses to the essential question. Students must give a thorough explanation of the differences and how to compare alike and differences to exhibit mastery of the lesson.


7. Describe special adaptations/modifications:

In order to meets the needs of any students with special needs I will refer to their IEP to properly come up with adaptations to meet their individual needs.
 

8. Anticipated instructional/behavior problems:

Behavior will be managed thru the use of a traffic light system. Noise will be the biggest form of misconduct due to the group work being conducted. The traffic light will remain green as long as volume is kept to a minimum and will change according to the classes volume.
